Why is the word "AMBULANCE" written backwards on emergency vehicles?

If you look at an ambulance approaching on the road, the front letters read: ECNALUBMA. Why would anyone paint letters in reverse?

Because of a fundamental law of plane mirror reflection called Lateral Inversion! When a car driver looks in their rear-view mirror, their mirror flips left and right. The backwards letters are flipped into perfectly readable text: AMBULANCE, allowing the driver to yield immediately.

1. Light Travels in Straight Lines

Look at a lit candle through a straight plastic pipe: you see the flame clearly. Bend the pipe into a curve: the flame disappears completely! Light travels strictly along straight paths. This phenomenon is called the rectilinear propagation of light.

2. Characteristics of Images Formed by a Plane Mirror

Virtual Image: The image cannot be projected onto a paper screen; it appears to be located behind the glass.
Erect: The image is upright (top stays top, bottom stays bottom).
Equal Size: The size of the image is strictly identical to the size of the object.

Lateral Inversion: The right side of the object appears as the left side of the image, and the left side appears as the right side.

Look at your reflection in a polished stainless steel spoon:

Convex Lens (Converging): Thicker in the center than at the edges. Bends incoming light rays inward to a focal point. Can burn a paper spot by concentrating sunlight; used as a magnifying glass, in eyeglasses for farsightedness, and in camera lenses.
Concave Lens (Diverging): Thinner in the middle and thicker at edges. Bends light rays outward. Always forms virtual, erect, and smaller images; used in peepholes of doors and eyeglasses for nearsightedness.

2. Sunlight is Seven Colors: Newton's Prism Experiment

In 1666, Sir Isaac Newton passed a narrow beam of white sunlight through a triangular glass prism. The light emerged on the opposite wall spread out into a brilliant spectrum of seven colors: VIBGYOR (Violet, Indigo, Blue, Green, Yellow, Orange, Red).

The splitting of white light into its constituent component colors is called the Dispersion of Light.

Newton's Colour Disc:

If you paint a cardboard disc with seven sectors of the rainbow colors and spin it rapidly, our eyes combine the reflected colors due to persistence of vision, and the disc appears completely white!
