1. Conduction (In Solids)

The process by which heat flows from the hotter end to the colder end of an object through vibrating particles without actual movement of the atoms.

• Conductors: Allow heat to pass easily (Metals: silver, copper, aluminum).
• Insulators: Do not allow heat to pass easily (Wood, plastic, air, glass, wool). Cooking pan handles are made of bakelite/wood to protect hands!

2. Convection (In Liquids & Gases)

The mode of heat transfer where particles of the fluid absorb heat, become less dense (lighter), and rise upward. Cooler, denser fluid moves down to take its place, setting up a circular convection current.

• Explains why heaters are placed on the floor (warm air rises) and air conditioners are mounted near the ceiling (cold air sinks).

3. Radiation (Through Empty Space)

The transfer of thermal energy via electromagnetic waves. Radiation requires NO medium and travels through a vacuum at the speed of light.

Sea Breeze (Daytime): Land heats up much faster than water. Warm air over land rises, creating low pressure. Cool, dense air from the sea blows inland to replace it. Windows of coastal houses face the sea!
Land Breeze (Nighttime): Land cools down much faster than water. The water stays warm, and warm air over the sea rises. Cool air from the land blows out towards the sea.

2. How a Thermos Flask Minimizes Heat Transfer

A vacuum flask keeps liquids hot (or cold) by blocking all three pathways:

• The Vacuum Gap: Between the double glass walls, all air is pumped out. With no particles present, Conduction and Convection cannot occur!

• Silvered Mirror Walls: The inner walls are coated with shiny silver, which reflects radiant heat waves back into the liquid, stopping Radiation!

• Insulated Cork/Cap: Made of plastic to prevent conduction at the neck.
